Impressed with The Red Mile

Saw my first Kentucky Futurity in about 12 or 15 years Sunday ans the Who's Who of folks who stopped by at the HHYF table was amazing. Far too many that I have not seen in far too long....including Jay Wolf, PR Guru for the Jug, Steve May from HTA and Jessica Schroeder from the USTA, who I am working on a couple projects with. And of course OHHA Honcho Jerry Knappenberger, who I saw a few weeks ago.

Cedar Dove impressed me int he Filly Futurity. I cannot believe she went off at 9-5 in the final or that the repeat exacta paid nearly $30.

I thought Dejarmbro was huge in the first Futurity heat and was a bit surprised that he got beat in the second. Especially considering how bad-gaited Manofmanymissions was, making a break in the opener and then holding together until just past the wire to upset in heat two. MOMM may not be sound or pretty gaited, but he is as game as they come. In the raceoff he was stone cold beaten by Dejarmbro halfway down the lane. But he dug in and did a great job to win.

Lots of energy at The Red Mile.. it really looks like they are trying to appeal to the customers (although they are still a bit more interested in the folks who will fork over sic-figures for the babies at the sales)with a table set up to promo their RedMile bets on-line wagering site (even if they do badmouth TwinSpires while doing) and with a great variety of bourbon available. Of course I was working and could not partake, but did send Lil Giss out to stock up the bourbon supply for back home.

While the drive in and out was a nightmare due to construction, the day was a blast and we raised a lot of money for HHYF through Drive For Youth, where owners, trainers and drivers pledged a percentage of their earnings or a flat rate.
And it looks like we are going to Pinehurst in April, which will be a blast.
