Starting next weekend we will provide my handicapping tips with every Northfield live program at no extra charge! Due to our printing schedule, the picks will be done two days in advance, so be sure to log on to Smokin' With The Giss’s at http://www.northfieldpark.com/, or watch the televised picks Dave Bianconi, Ayres Ratliff or Keith provide nightly for updates on changed weather conditions or just plain old changed minds.
As you look at the February 14 races, hopefully over a glass of wine and nice chunk of prime rib in our clubhouse restaurant, remember that the track deteriorated as the night wen ton last Saturday due to the warm temps. While it was officially rated -1 for the entire night, I would argue -1 for the first 6-8 races and at least -2 for the back half of the card. That makes Whatanartist and Category Six's miles more impressive than Royalton Star's or Lite Me up's.
Race 1: 4 Green Acre Pill- Racing better for new connections; 3 Thebigguyfromtown- Doesn’t always fire, but fits here; 9 Mans Star- Dropped to this level in last and woke up.
Race 2: 5 Dublin Dollars- Only horse who can beat Dublin Dollars here is Dublin Dollars; 9 Rj’s Message- drops to a level at which he can compete; 8 Yankee Summit- Was better in last with Lasix; can he overcome the eight?
Race 3:1 Up front Guy- Gets a Kakaley and a post, that’s enough for me; 2 Fancy Schmansy-Back class and a decent qually, but has not won since Fred Noe ran the USTA; 6 Eagle Tack- consistent sort.
Race 4: 5 Rapid Dialing- Stahl’s choice over 4 and 8; regally bred and in good form; 3 Fortune Ho- raced well off the claim- Deaton chooses off so he’s stuck with Kakaley. Aww. 1 Sparks Of Gold- Last start was better than it looks; 7 Allamercian Viper- Need some value and he could get there with a trip.
Race 5: 8 Smok’n Coalburner- Super sharp, could overcome the 8 and may be better priced than ML; 9 Kami’s Call- the class dropping, but style better suited for a big track, imo; 1 Pine Hill Jewel- First time Kakaley for this mare.
Race 6: 2 J T Stena- Always does work & Fraker’s at .635; 4 Bj’s Tune- Not as a versatile as the top pick; 6 Romance’s Thunder- into straight claimers and may be no value but could wrap up the tri.
Race 7: 2 Go Again- Varoom, Varoom; 4 Pc Sam- 3rd back and first recent post; 9 Mr. Ahh- sets up well here; 1 Saucy Brown- Beat better two back, gets the rail
Race 8: 2 Heez Ruthless N- won at this level last time he drew well; 1 Forever Nugget- consistent and draws well; 5 Rella’s Trick- Needs to do a bit more work
Race 9: 3 Artistic Dreamer- Impressive in last; should repeat; 1 Slade Gram- races well when he draws well; he does; he should; 2 Soul Redeemer- Kakaley for Hershberger has been a sick number of late.
Race 10: 3 Wind Surfer- Stahl’s choice quallied like a champ;6 Armbro Approach- likes Ohio more than Ontario; 2 R Cowboy- Draws best of the other legit contenders.
Race 11: 7 Whatanartist- Effort was better than it looked- see my notes above; 6 Lite Me Up- Not as sharp as he was, but ’08 HOTY is no slouch; 8 Pronger- Jug heat winner draws horribly but Q was impressive
Race 12: 6 Category Six- Last line look flat, but he pulled on a game winner; 3 Lakeside AL N- Class drop despite 3 on the boards in last 5; 1 Mr Cadillac- can leave for position.
Race 13: 3 Izamillionare- been better with Lasix and drops; 5 Take Down Hall- love ETE’s who win like he did Wed; 9 Don’t Say No- Don’t know why; 4 Spirit Freeluck drops to level of last win.
