The Meadolwands Trot, errr, Hambletonian is tomorrow, and while I have had little interest in the race since they made elims the week before the final, Deweycheatumnhowe has certainly caught my eye. First off, Ray Schnittker is one of the good guys-- I remember him at Northfield in the Battle with Covert Action and he would always bring a trailerful for the underacrd like Six Day War (the double gaited world champion who eventually gave Mark Ford his first break in the biz).

Some wags are saying why even hold the race? Just cut Dewey the check. He is undefetaed and he won't lose. They said the same about CR Kay Suzie...I am pretty sure the entire Hambletonian Society applauded when that "hobble-wearing piece of %*T*," made her break. They were that much against Carl Allen's filly because of the trotting hopples.

And just last week, they said Somebeachsomewhere couldn't lose. So, what happens? Paul MacDonnell drives Somebeach like he is 10 lengths the best with a three-wide move at a 51-second half!! And loses by less than a length. If Mac had driven tthe horse like he was 8 lengths the best, he probably wins. BTW- Somebeach is in Ontario tomorrow and look for him to rebound.

A horse that won't rebound is Big Brown Sunday in the Haskell. I am betting the rest of the field to show. Although the star-crossed Derby and Preakness champ has had a couple decent workouts lately, I think he is toast.

Great racing on TV, with the Hambo, the Haskell and more. If you can't get to Northfield or your local track, check out the tube. Especially the Hambo coverage (NBC, I am pretty sure). Harness racing isn't on mainstream TV too often and it will be our sport's chance to shine.

Interesting note on the trotting hopples. Not much fuss about them in recent years. Not a word about them on Dewey.
